Welcome to Buckeye Wisdom, a section devoted to the new book by Earle Bruce.  The book contains many inspirational stories, quotes and passages that pertain to Buckeye football.  This is the newest Ohio State football book from Triumph Books, whose gracious cooperation in letting us use the book Greatest Moments in Ohio State Football History by Bruce Hooley as a primary resource is a big reason why Bucknuts' Buckeye History section is possible.

Below are a few passages from the book.  Read them, and then you can check out below how to order Buckeye Wisdom:

Coach Bruce on Winning and Losing:

"Success in football is in direct proportion to how your great football players play in the big games --  and how your "others" rise to the occasion.  Great players always play well in big games and make big plays.  They meet the challenge, and then some.  Let's all remember that the opponents we play have great players -- let's give them credit for their plays.  We all recognize great effort, desire, great teamwork, and great coaching during the game.  Don't bring up the negative or the adverse plays or criticize individual players or coaches.  Remember to criticize the performance, not the performer.  Mistakes do happen and they are tough to accept, but mistakes are accentuated more when you lose.  The next game is the most important game, not the last game."

Coach Bruce with Some Thoughts on Football and Life:

"-Real wealth comes to the one who learns that he is paid best for the things he does for nothing."

"-To be average is to be the lowest of the good and the best of the bad.  Who wants to be average?"

"-It is a case of give and take in this world, with not enough people willing to give what it takes."

"-One cannot always be a hero, but one can be a man."

"-Noah didn't wait for his ship to come in -- he built one."

Coach Bruce on Coaching:

"Coaching football is a great profession.  I enjoyed coaching for forty-three years.  I worked hard, but I always enjoyed myself.  I could honestly say I never worked a day in my life.  A successful coach is a good teacher.  Teach the fundamentals of football, teach the players to work hard and give their best effort, teach a good team attitude, teach discipline.  To be a successful coach you must see that the players graduate.  The coach is a role model on and off the field, and he must help the players to learn what he himself has learned from playing the game of football."

Coach Bruce on the Michigan Game:

"The game that makes or breaks the season is the Michigan game.  The Rose Bowl or Fiesta Bowl usually hang in the balance and anything less is the Toilet Bowl."
