Ohio State sophomore cornerback James Scott is curiously absent from preseason camp. The scholarship player from Daytona Beach, Fla., was expected to make a push for the two deep this season. It is unclear why Scott is not practicing with the Buckeyes at this time, but an OSU spokesperson tried to shed some light on the matter.

In what could only be described as a very strange situation to say the least, sophomore cornerback James Scott was not among the players that reported to Ohio State’s preseason camp this week.

A spokesperson from Ohio State tried to shed some light on why Scott -- a scholarship player from Daytona Beach, Fla. -- is not practicing with the Buckeyes at this time.

“He was not in the 105 that were asked to report to camp,” the spokesperson said.

It is unclear if Scott is being disciplined for something that happened over the summer, but that seems to be the most likely of the possibilities. There were rumblings that his absense was performance related, but that would be the first time that ever happened in the Jim Tressel era. Usually, the only reason scholarship players aren’t welcomed back is due to disciplinary or academic issues.

Now the question is when Scott will re-join the football team, if he does at all. Could he report by the first game on Aug. 30? Might he join the team when school begins in mid-September?

“Could be either,” the OSU spokesperson said. “Some more guys will be reporting at each of those times.”

Following an impressive spring, Scott was expected to push for a spot in the two-deep at corner this season. The top four corners appear to be set with Malcolm Jenkins, Donald Washington, Chimdi Chekwa and Andre Amos. However, with Washington possibly facing a one-or-two-game suspension to open the season, playing time appeared to be imminent for Scott.

At Seabreeze High School, Scott was ranked as one of the top 10 cornerbacks in the country by several recruiting services and was a two-time second-team All-Florida selection. As a senior in 2006, he had 59 tackles and two interceptions. As a junior in 2005, he recorded 62 tackles and four picks.

As a freshman at OSU in 2007, Scott had six tackles on the season and most of his playing time came on special teams. He also recovered a fumble against Washington.

Scott’s predicament might be one of the reasons Ohio State is recruiting so many defensive backs in its 2009 class (five verbal commitments from DBs so far). If he does not return to the team, it would open up another scholarship that could be used for the ’09 class. Currently, OSU has 24 verbal commitments and there are reports the team wants to sign 27 or maybe as many as 28 prospects in February.

* The other player not in camp is freshman defensive tackle Shawntel Rowell from Cleveland Glenville. His predicament is due to academics.

“Yeah, Shawntel is not with us right now,” Tressel said on Monday. “He hopes to be with us in January, or actually the end of December. But he’s not in this 105.”

Huh, wow...kinda came out of nowhere...but most of us are not exactly close to the situation, either.
I have had high hopes for this man.Hopefully he will get sorted out. What is the deal with corners in the history of Ohio State? E.J.Banks..... We need you!
Hope the kid comes back, but if he doesn't, maybe that will open things back up for Emilien or McGee? If he's not gonna be on the team, the staff needs to jump on one of those guys and reel him back in. Or maybe one of the other top recruits considering us. I was really looking forward to Scott getting on the field and seeing what he could do.
^^Forgot about E.J. Banks. Him too.
^^Forgot about E.J. Banks. Him too.
Did anyone forget about EJ Banks
It apprears we are out of the picture for McGee's services. We are not in his top three at this time.
Get this kid fixed NOW!!! I'm really concerned about depth this year as well as next year- especially after we lose so many DB's
Very critical situation. With 8 teams in the league running the spread, we need DB'S BAD!!!! This definately needs to be a big focus. McGee dropped us because he said O-State quit showing me love. Banks has said the same. It is almost impossible these guys will reconsider. Good Luck!!!
What big babys! "Quit showing me love"? Come on. You either want to be a Buckeye or you don't. We want/need men, not babys.
Even with Clifford and Scott gone, I think 6 DBs is plenty for this class, I would rather we fill remaining slots with other positions, like TE or DL. If a great DB wants to commit, fine, but its not like we need one.
I think big picture, we should just all hope that everything is OK with this kid. The only facts in hand are that kid didn't show up. With Jenkins being a senior and Washington a big year away from going pro, Scott could have been in line for a starting position next year or atleast #3 corner. Not to mention, what if one or two go down to injury this year!?!?!? I hope young Mr. Scott finds his way back tOSU.
Did you guys even read the article? Scott hasn't been kicked off the team. Hell, he may even be back before the season starts. Wouldn't surprise me if he redshirted this year.
We outdueled some good SEC schools for this guy. Let's hope it works out. Trying to get the bad taste out of my mouth with Clifford and potentially another knucklehead, Donald Washington !
What happened to Donnie Evege ?
