WV junior RB Allan Wasonga, who has rushed for 4,000 plus yards, is on OSU’s radar.
Junior running back Allan Wasonga from Parkersburg, W.V., is on the Buckeyes’ radar screen. Wasonga is one of the top two juniors in the state of West Virginia.
The 5-foot-10 and 200-pound Wasonga moved from Kenya to West Virginia at age 8. He attended Point Pleasant High his freshman and sophomore years. Last season, in his first year as a varsity starter, Wasonga rushed for 1,937 yards.
After transferring to Parkersburg for his junior year, Wasonga has rushed for 2,110 yards with 28 touchdowns through ten games. Wasonga is also averaging 25.5 yards per kickoff return as Parkersburg is set to play in the first round of the state playoffs the weekend of Nov. 13.
Wasonga has a written scholarship offer from Ohio University and a verbal offer from Syracuse.
“More than likely West Virginia is going to offer,” Wasonga said. “Virginia Tech, Marshall and UCLA have interest in me, and Michigan, Penn State and Notre Dame too. Ohio State is another one.”
When asked about both Ohio State and Penn State, Wasonga said, “I like both schools. Both have good football programs. I took a tour of Ohio State awhile back. After the season I’m going to set up maybe five to ten unofficial visits.”
Wasonga said Ohio State is one of the schools he might visit.
The Buckeyes are certainly no stranger to Parkersburg High. Two years ago they went down to the wire for offensive lineman Josh Jenkins. Jenkins ended up signing with West Virginia over Ohio State and started for the Mountaineers as a true freshman.
Junior offensive lineman Justin Johnson, Wasonga’s teammate, is Jenkins’ brother. Johnson and Wasonga are the top two juniors in the state of West Virginia.
The 6-foot-3 and 295-pound Johnson starts at offensive tackle for Parkersburg as Jenkins did two years ago. Like Jenkins, Johnson will likely move to guard in college. And it looks like Johnson will be joining his brother in Morgantown.
“Justin has been offered (a scholarship) by West Virginia,” Parkersburg Assistant Coach Mark McCullough said. “I believe Maryland will offer shortly. But I feel Justin will commit to West Virginia. He might commit this weekend.”
Johnson is expected to attend the Mountaineers’ game against Louisville on Saturday.
Kurelic’s Comment: Johnson is not going to end up at Ohio State, but Wasonga is someone to keep an eye one in regards to Buckeye recruiting.
