The Ohio State coaching staff continues their efforts to land Georgia cornerback Brad Roby. It is looking more and more like they may be successful in their bid.

At this point the Buckeyes do not have a cornerback commitment in their 2010 recruiting class.  The only defensive back commitment Jim Tressel currently has is Canonsburg (Pa.) Canon McMillan standout Chad Hagan who is headed to Ohio State as a safety.

The Buckeyes are very much in the running to sign Cleveland (Ohio) Glenville stars Latwan Anderson and Christian Bryant.  Both will play in the secondary at the next level and both have the potential to play either safety or cornerback.  In fact Anderson and Bryant have told Bucknuts.com that they have been told by the OSU coaching staff they could play either corner or safety if they were to select Ohio State.

The one pure cornerback that could end up in this Buckeye recruiting class is Brad Roby from Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge.

The 6-foot-0 and 170-pound Roby made 40 tackles, intercepted six passes and took two of them back for touchdowns during his senior season.  He also caught 26 passes for 570 yards with five receiving touchdowns.  Roby returned punts and kickoffs too and had 12 total touchdowns.

Roby committed to Vanderbilt in late July over scholarship offers from West Virginia, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Auburn, Boston College and some others.

Roby is still committed to Vanderbilt, but it seems just as likely at this point that he ends up at Ohio State.  Roby had an official visit set to Auburn the weekend of Jan. 8 and one to Vanderbilt Jan. 15.

However, Roby has replaced Auburn with Ohio State and will visit the Buckeyes Jan. 8 instead, though he may visit Auburn after Vanderbilt.

When asked if Ohio State is currently No. 2 on his list behind Vanderbilt, Roby said, “Ohio State is really high up.  I’m really liking them now.”

Vanderbilt has recruited Roby as a wide receiver.

“Other than me they have three more receiver (commitments),” Roby said.  “Ohio State doesn’t have any cornerback commitments right now, but I know they have some young cornerbacks there.  It doesn’t matter to me which position I play in college.”

It does not hurt the Buckeyes’ chances that Roby is from the same high school as current Buckeye defensive lineman Cameron Heyward, and Roby’s mother is very good friends with Heyward’s mother.  In fact Roby’s mother will attend the Rose Bowl with Heyward’s mother.

Kurelic’s Comment: If his official visit goes like I think it will, I would not be surprised at all to see Roby change his commitment from Vanderbilt to Ohio State.
