Henderson's father has spoken of coaching stability being important; was that lip service?
Seantrel Henderson will announce his choice on signing day and the recent vibe is that Ohio State is suddenly a long-shot for the recruit it once led for.
Henderson (6-foot-8, 320 pounds) is expected to choose between Notre Dame, OSU and Southern Cal on Wednesday, and there are rumblings that the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle could be landing in the arms of Lane Kiffin.
I have admired the way Henderson’s father – Sean Henderson – has handled the recruiting process. He has spoken of stability, honesty, academics – all the right things. Relationships with the coaching staff were also an important factor, he said.
Well, you can throw all of that out the window if Henderson inks with the Trojans roughly 48 hours from now.
First of all, he was never considering Tennessee while Kiffin was there. USC was always in the picture, but after Pete Carroll left for the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, many assumed that would hurt the Trojans’ chances of landing Henderson.
However, it seems to have had no affect at all.
Therefore, one has to wonder if the elder Henderson is a man of his word, or a man that just likes to say things that sound good.
If Seantrel Henderson was leaning USC’s way all along, that’s fine. But why the long, drawn-out process? Why say all that stuff about how criticial stability is at a particular program?
And if coaching relationships are so important, why is Notre Dame still in the picture? I don’t remember Henderson having any interest in Cincinnati while Brian Kelly was there. That’s right, because he didn’t.
So, maybe I’m just reading too much into it, but after months of hearing Sean Henderson talk about how important coaching stability is to him and his son, it might have been nothing more than lip service. Words that looked good in print.
Then again, maybe the Hendersons are just trying to keep everyone guessing. Either way, they appear to be having fun with the recruiting process – which is certainly their right – and it will be interesting to see where the chips fall on Wednesday.
