The Ohio State men's basketball team picked up a big addition to their 2010 recruiting class today with the commitment of Columbus Northland small forward J.D. Weatherspoon.
Weatherspoon (6-6, 200) selected the Buckeyes over Georgia Tech, Maryland, Wisconsin, and Arizona. Weatherspoon was originally committed to Xavier but backed out after head coach Sean Miller took the head coaching job at Arizona.
Weatherspoon, known for his athleticism and high-flying style, becomes the sixth member of a recruiting class that already ranks as one of the nation's best and features four ESPN top 100 players. ESPN.com gives Weatherspoon a scouts grade of 92.
"J.D. is a super athletic combo forward," ESPN.com writes. "This lefty appears to fall from the ceiling on some of his highlight reel dunks. He is developing a perimeter game. He is a streaky shooter to 17 feet right now and is limited with his off the dribble game. Weatherspoon is most comfortable on the block. Inside J.D. is able to spin or jump over opponents for easy buckets. He is also proficient using either hand inside. When in position as a weakside rebounder he is excellent. He has great timing and is able to use either hand inside.
"He is a very good rebounder for his size. He is definitely more of an undersized 4 man than a 3 right now. Defensively he is a good shotblocker inside due to his incredible bounce. He does struggle some in space which adds to the argument of his true position being that of a power forward."
